Just do not shut down the engine just after you start it. It has to be warm to prevent flooding.

Quite the present indeed. I heard somewhere that, with a rotary engine, if it's a manual tranny, do not keep the clutch engaged(pedal held down) while stopped at a light. Put the car in neutral and hold the brake while waiting for the light to change. Had something to do with the seals.
Check all resources about RX-8's you can. Online and your owners manual are some of the best places to begin. Do a Google search for an RX-8 specific site and join up. They'll know more than I, or the majority of us on this board, as we probably don't own that car.
Don't forget the Automotive section here on the message boards either. Click on that and click on Mazda and ask there.
Happy Birthday and good luck!

Takes a bit more maintenance than a piston engine. Also, the mpg won't be any better than a 6 banger.

As others have said; maintenance, maintenance, maintenance. There's a 50,000 mile engine rebuild penalty for you if you don't do the needed work on time.

Open owner's manual.
Find the severe service schedule.
Follow it. To the letter. No excuses.
